The Most Useful Thing I Bring to a Company of Forty People Is Knowing What to Leave Out.
Large manufacturers run real systems. Defined processes, data standards, documented procedures, controls, an operating cadence that does not depend on who happens to be in the building that day. There are good reasons for every piece of it.
Drop that whole apparatus into a company of forty and it dies in a drawer by March. Not because the people are not capable. Because it was built for an organization with the staff to run it, and you do not have that staff, and you should not want it.
So the question is never what a large company does. It is which parts of it are worth having here, in what order, and at what cost in everybody else's time.
That is a judgment call, and it is the part worth paying for. Get it wrong one way and nothing changes. Get it wrong the other way and you have spent six months and a good deal of goodwill installing process that nobody uses.
I know what good looks like at scale, and I know which parts of it are worth having in a company like yours.
When I look at what a company of forty needs, I ask three things about every piece of a large company system. Does it solve a problem you have today? Can your current people run it without adding headcount? Will it still be used in six months? If the answer to any of them is no, it waits.
